Sonamura court sentences Mohammad Yunus to 3 yrs imprisonment for assault and attempted molestation

Agartala, 1st March 2025 :   Mohammad Yunus has been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000 by the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court of Sonamura. In default of payment, he will serve an additional month of rigorous imprisonment. The verdict was announced by Chief Judicial Magistrate Shubhdeep Saha today.

The government’s lawyer APP in-charge Chanchal Roy Chowdhury stated that the incident took place on December 19, 2019 at 3 PM in the Mohanbhog area under Melaghar police station. The complainant Akhirani Pal Datta protested against the abuse of her family members by their neighbor Mohammad Yunus. In response, Yunus attacked Akhirani’s disabled son and other women in the house and attempted to molest her. As a result, Chinurani Pal required hospital treatment.

Following the incident, Akhirani filed a case at Melaghar police station. The investigating officer ASI Birendra Das submitted a charge sheet against Mohammad Yunus after conducting an investigation. The court reached its verdict after taking statements from eight witnesses. Advocate Shafiqul Islam represented the defendant in the case.
