Agartala, 18th November 2025: Students of Srinathpur High School under Gournagar block in Unakoti district today staged a road blockade on the Nurpur–Hirachhara road demanding immediate withdrawal of the transfer order of popular science teacher Ram Debnath. The agitation, which began around 1 PM, brought vehicular movement to a complete halt in both directions, causing severe hardship to daily commuters and passengers.
The protest turned tense after leaders of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) reached the spot and joined the blockade. Later, the agitators lifted the road blockade following requests from local administration but marched to the school and gheraoed the headmaster for several hours.
SFI divisional president Sagar Bhattacharya alleged that the education department has been transferring teachers from Srinathpur High School almost every month without posting replacements, severely affecting the academic environment. “Discriminatory treatment is being meted out to the students of this school,” he claimed, warning that the agitation would continue unless the transfer order is revoked or a new science teacher is appointed immediately.
The protest ended only after district education officials visited the school at around 4 PM and held discussions with SFI leaders. At 4:30 PM, the department issued a written order appointing Sumit Sharma as the new science teacher at Srinathpur High School. Officials said the new teacher will join duty from tomorrow.
Upon receiving the written order, the SFI leaders released the headmaster from the gherao and called off the agitation.
Among the SFI leaders present were divisional president Sagar Bhattacharya, student leader Shahabuddin and others.
