Agartala, 19th July 2025: In a rare display of student activism, pupils from Damcherra English Medium School in Panisagar subdivision blocked the Chamtila–Jalabasa road this afternoon protesting the transfer of their teachers. The two-hour blockade brought traffic to a standstill, inconveniencing hundreds of commuters and drawing swift administrative attention.
The school located in the tribal-dominated area of North Tripura district has nearly 300 students. Originally staffed with nine teachers, it was left with seven after two transfers earlier this month. Tensions escalated when another teacher was handed a transfer order, prompting students to stage a sit-in on the adjacent road.
“Our education is suffering. With only six teachers now, classes are disrupted and we’re falling behind,” said one of the protesting students.
Damcherra Police Station personnel arrived at the scene to maintain order, followed by School Inspector Sujit Debbarma and Deputy Collector Sukumar Reang, who met with the students. After assurances that the transfer would be reconsidered and adequate teaching staff would be appointed soon, the students called off the blockade.
“We’ve given the administration ten days. If our demands aren’t met, we will resume the blockade with greater intensity,” warned a student representative.
