Surge in essential commodity prices leads to crackdown on dishonest traders

BY TC News Desk

Agartala, 20th May 2024 :   : In a recent development that has left the local populace grappling with soaring prices, the cost of daily essentials such as potatoes and onions has seen an unprecedented hike. The surge is attributed to the capricious pricing strategies employed by unscrupulous traders in the market. Despite consistent operations by the administrative authorities, there has been a notable lack of stringent measures against these dishonest market players. The administrative raids appear to be mere formalities, conducted under the pretense of public service.

The situation escalated on Monday when the headquarters enforcement team initiated a crackdown on two establishments in the Siddhi Ashram area of the capital city. The operation was a collaborative effort involving officials from the Food Department, the Legal Metrology Department, and officers from the Sadar Sub-Divisional Administration.

Pradip Bhowmik, a key member of the Sadar Enforcement Team disclosed that the initial inspection focused on the pricing of potatoes and onions at the capital’s Battala market. Following a specific complaint, the team proceeded to raid Siddhi Ashram Shiv Durga Varatize, where it was discovered that cold drinks were being sold at inflated prices. A subsequent raid on a nearby cake shop uncovered several discrepancies.

Bhowmik announced that a comprehensive report detailing the irregularities at both shops would be submitted to the Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate. Additionally, the Director of the food department will be apprised of the findings, he confirmed.
