Agartala, 30th November 2024:  A consumer rights awareness program was organized by the Consumer Club at the Conference Hall of Maharaja Bir Bikram University here on Saturday. The event aimed to educate the public about their rights and responsibilities under the Universal Consumer Protection Act and how to seek redressal for grievances.

Speaking at the event, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury highlighted the importance of being well-informed about the quality, quantity, purity, price, and standard of products and services. “It is our collective responsibility to make everyone aware of the Universal Consumer Protection Act in the interest of consumers,” he stated.

Minister Chowdhury emphasized the government’s efforts to launch awareness programs on consumer rights across schools, colleges, and universities in the state. “The aim is to ensure that the common man does not face any loss while buying things from the market with his hard-earned money. Through these programs, every person in the state will be informed about their consumer rights and how to access legal services for redressal,” he explained.

Justice Arindam Lodh of the Tripura High Court, who attended the program as the chief guest, discussed the legal aspects of consumer rights in detail. “The common people are still not particularly aware of the legal services related to consumer rights. These programs are crucial in bridging that gap,” he remarked.

Director of the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department, Sumit Lodh, also spoke at the event, providing insights into the services offered by the Food Department for customer service. “If a consumer is cheated in any way by a seller, they can directly complain to the Food Department on a white paper,” he assured.

The program was presided over by Professor Satyadeo Poddar, Vice Chancellor of Maharaja Bir Bikram University. Additional special guests included Animesh Debbarma, Director of the Tripura Higher Education Department, and Dr. Sumanta Chakraborty, Registrar of MBB University, who delivered the welcome speech.

The awareness program highlighted the government’s commitment to protecting consumer rights and ensuring that individuals are well-informed and empowered to seek justice in cases of consumer grievances.
