Agartala, 11th April 2026: Unakoti district’s Gouranagar block has witnessed rising tension after allegations of farmland encroachment in Ichhapur village panchayat’s Pakhirbada area.
According to complaints, a farmer’s private agricultural land was occupied overnight by installing idols of deities, allegedly as part of an attempt to seize the property.
The landowner, Bibhas Chandra Deb, claimed that under the pretext of building a temple, efforts were being made to forcibly take over his land. He further stated that when he objected, he faced pressure and threats. Deb has already lodged a written complaint with Kailashahar police station.
Police visited the site following the complaint but reportedly refrained from immediate action. Officials said the installation of idols has made the matter religiously sensitive, complicating swift intervention.
Local residents have raised questions about the administration’s role in handling the situation, as the atmosphere in the area remains tense.
Meanwhile, the landowner has approached the Sub-Divisional Magistrate seeking justice. All eyes are now on the administration’s next steps to defuse the situation.
