Agartala, 18th September 2025: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken cognizance of a complaint alleging wrongful arrest in Dhalai district and directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to submit a detailed enquiry report by October 16.
In his order, THRC Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh noted that the complaint was filed by one Babul Das of Bhowliabasti, Ambassa, against the Officer-in-Charge of Ambassa Police Station and an unidentified Sub-Inspector.
According to the complaint, Das was arrested on the basis of a warrant issued by the Judicial Magistrate 1st Class, North Tripura, in connection with PRC (WP) 54 of 2024 at Dharmanagar Police Station. The warrant, however, was issued in the name of one Barun Das. Police allegedly carried out the arrest by recording the complainant’s name as “Babul Das alias Barun Das.”
The complainant maintained that he had no criminal case pending against him, had never visited Dharmanagar, and was not the person named in the warrant. He further alleged that despite informing OC Ambassa and SI Hannanir Rahaman of the mistaken identity, his arrest was executed without proper verification—amounting to a violation of his fundamental rights.
“Since there is a complaint that the fundamental rights of a citizen have been curtailed by the concerned OC along with one SI of Police, this Commission thinks it appropriate to take cognizance of the matter,” the order stated.
The THRC has directed the DGP to conduct a thorough enquiry and place the findings before the Commission by October 16.
