Agartala, 16th February 2026: Three Bangladeshi nationals were detained by Tripura Police late on February 15 on suspicion of attempting to cross the international border illegally.
According to officials from Tripura Police, personnel from Jatrapur Police Station under Sepahijala district acted on a tip-off around 11:30 pm and reached Thindeba Choumuhani in the Nidaya area. Local residents had reportedly noticed three individuals moving in a suspicious manner and detained them before alerting the police.
Officer-in-Charge Sriti Kanta Bardhan said a police team, accompanied by Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel, took the trio into custody. During preliminary interrogation, the detainees allegedly stated that they had travelled to different parts of India, including Bengaluru, nearly four years ago in search of employment. They were reportedly trying to return to Bangladesh through Tripura when they were apprehended.
Police sources said the location where the three were found lies about 500 metres east of the barbed-wire fencing along the India-Bangladesh international border.
The detained individuals have been identified as Ataul Sheikh, Azizur Sheikh, and Swapna Sheikh, all residents of Narail district in Bangladesh. Officials said they have been questioned and will be produced before a court with a request for remand.
