Agartala, 22nd October 2025: An eco-friendly sapling protection guard named “Green Guard” was launched by Tinku Roy, Minister of Social Welfare & Social Education in the morning today at Unakoti Heritage Site on the occasion of Mega plantation. “Green Guard”- a joint initiative of Unakoti Kailashahar Forest Sub-Division & Go Green Volunteers, NGO. The dream project of KG Roy, Former DFO of Unakoti District has dual purposes. It reuses discarded plastic bottles and ensures watering of saplings during the dry season.
Earlier, Roy, in his address as chief guest of Mega plantation drive ceremony expressed concern over the drying up of Sita Kunda- a sacred water body and emphasized the need of large scale plantation towards restoring the lost bio- diversity of Unakoti along with revival of Sita Kunda.
Roy said “It is our moral duty to take initiative to revive the source of water at Sita Kunda, the holy spring through extensive plantation.” He also highlighted the ongoing project at Sinamukhi centering Unakoti Heritage site.
Dr. Tamal Majumdar, IAS, DM & Collector, Unakoti District; Abhijit Dey, District Forest Officer, Unakoti Forest Division; Shuvam Das, SDFO, Kailashahar Forest Sub- Division; Chapala Debroy, Chairperson, Kailashahar Municipal Council highlighted the importance of plantation in their addresses.
Around, 100 saplings were planted. The remaining 900 saplings will be planted in 2026 in the month of June. In this connection, Roy sanctioned an amount of Rs 2 Lakh from the BEUP Fund.
Arghya Saha, ADM & Collector, Unakoti District and Bipul Das, Sub- Divisional Magistrate also remained present.
