Agartala, 23rd August 2025:   Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma has alleged large-scale corruption in the recent recruitment of women constables in the state police, claiming that a candidate secured the job using a “fake” Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificate.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, Debbarma named one candidate, Anamika Debbarma, daughter of Kajal Sinha of Fultali village, Unakoti district, who allegedly obtained an ST certificate from the Kailasahar SDM’s office using “fake and fabricated documents.” He claimed that the certificate was issued with the involvement of a “corrupted SDM and dealing assistants.”

Debbarma pointed out that while Anamika’s father belongs to the Manipuri community (unreserved category), she secured the constable post under the ST category by using her mother’s surname and tribe identity. “It is a well-settled law in Tripura and India that caste or tribe status of children is determined by the father’s identity, not the mother’s,” the MLA wrote.

He further alleged that despite such discrepancies, Anamika was included in the recruitment merit list (Serial No.124, Roll No.10049) and selected against an unreserved vacancy after being evaluated under the ST criteria. Calling the role of the recruitment board “suspicious and frustrating,” Debbarma accused the Chairman of the Selection Committee, IPS officer Jayanta Chakraborty, of negligence and possible complicity.

“The Police Department is a very prestigious and sensitive department, yet such corruption is seen even at the recruitment stage,” the letter stated.

The Tipra Motha legislator demanded:

Criminal cases against Anamika Debbarma, the concerned SDM, recruitment officials, and associates involved in issuing and validating the alleged fake certificate.

Immediate cancellation of the candidate’s appointment and similar cases from the recruitment list.

A thorough review of the entire recruitment process to detect “financial corruption and documentary fraud.”

Cancellation of ST facilities for tribal women who marry non-tribal men, claiming such cases are misused to extend benefits to non-ST families.

Debbarma also referred to an earlier letter he had submitted to the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) demanding cancellation of ST benefits for women who marry outside the community.

He urged the Chief Minister to take “instant action to uphold transparency and protect the faith of genuine candidates and citizens of Tripura.”
