Agartala, 31st December 2025: The Tipra Motha Party (TMP), part of Tripura’s BJP-led coalition, has stepped up its demand for a national anti-racial law, warning that the absence of such legislation leaves people from the Northeast vulnerable to discrimination and violence.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Agartala, TMP leaders Rajeshwar Debbarma, C.K. Jamatia, and Anthony Debbarma argued that current legal safeguards fail to adequately address racially motivated crimes. They insisted that only a dedicated law could give authorities the tools to act decisively against recurring racial abuse faced by Northeastern citizens across India.
The renewed appeal comes in the wake of the death of 24-year-old Angel Chakma, a Tripura student who was brutally attacked in Dehradun on December 9. Chakma, a final-year MBA student from the Chakma tribal community and son of a BSF jawan, succumbed to his injuries after 18 days of treatment. Witnesses allege that the assailants hurled racial slurs during the assault.
TMP spokesperson Rajeshwar Debbarma demanded exemplary punishment for those involved and urged the application of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The party also condemned what it described as a sluggish and inadequate response by Uttarakhand authorities. Anthony Debbarma noted that police registered a case only after Tripura MP Kriti Devi Debbarman intervened and the victim’s father traveled to Dehradun to press for action.
In a video message, TMP chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma accused the Uttarakhand administration of attempting to minimize the racial aspect of the crime. He reiterated that the attackers used derogatory terms such as “Chinki” and “Chinese,” and announced a ₹10 lakh reward for information leading to the arrest of the prime accused, who is believed to have fled to Nepal.
The killing has sparked outrage across the Northeast. Leaders including Assam MP Gaurav Gogoi, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, along with several regional and student organizations, have condemned the incident as a hate crime and demanded swift justice.
