TPCC Blasts BJP Over RTI Weakening and Governance Gaps

BY TC News Desk

Agartala, 12th October 2025 :  The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) on Sunday launched a strong critique of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, accusing it of eroding transparency and weakening democratic institutions.

Addressing the media at Congress Bhavan, TPCC President Ashish Kumar Saha alleged that the BJP has been mired in corruption and failed to ensure transparency in various welfare schemes. He highlighted the Right to Information (RTI) Act, enacted in 2005 under the UPA government, as a cornerstone of citizen empowerment and accountability.

Saha claimed that since 2014, the RTI framework has faced systematic dilution, with amendments curtailing the independence of Information Commissions and broadening exemptions under the guise of protecting personal data. He pointed to concerning statistics, including over 4 lakh pending RTI appeals nationwide and a critically understaffed Central Information Commission, currently operating with just two commissioners.

The Congress leader also criticized the lack of transparency in key public matters such as the PM CARES Fund, electoral bonds, and COVID-related expenditures. He condemned the prolonged delay in implementing the Whistle Blowers Protection Act and urged the government to take immediate steps to restore the autonomy of Information Commissions, fill vacancies, and ensure the safety of RTI activists.

Marking the 20th anniversary of the RTI Act, Saha reaffirmed the Congress party’s dedication to transparency and democratic accountability, calling on the government to uphold the principles of openness and public scrutiny.
