Agartala, 3rd February 2026: Last night turned into a nightmare for a local family when a speeding truck lost control and crashed into their home near Subhash Setu Bridge, killing one woman and leaving the community in shock.
At around 9:30 p.m., residents of the Agriculture Chowmuhani area were jolted awake by a deafening crash. A truck, reportedly coming from Killa towards Udaipur, veered off balance near the Subhash Setu Bridge and flew off the road in a dramatic fashion before smashing into a residential house. The impact shook the entire neighborhood.
Inside the house lived Raju Saha and his family. At the time of the accident, four members were present. Raju, his wife, and child managed to escape with their lives, but the family’s eldest member, 68-year-old Sabita Saha, was trapped under the wreckage. Despite desperate cries and frantic rescue efforts, she could not be saved.
Local residents immediately alerted the fire service, and rescue operations began. However, the massive truck and collapsed structure made the task extremely difficult. Police Superintendent Dr. Kiran Kumar K, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Debanjali Roy, officers from Radhakishorepur Police Station, TSR personnel, and later the Disaster Management team joined the operation. After two and a half hours of strenuous effort with bulldozers, Sabita Saha was finally pulled out—only to be declared dead upon arrival at Gomati District Hospital.
Meanwhile, the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the crash. Police have launched an investigation and are searching for the absconding driver. “This is a deeply unfortunate incident. Strict legal action will be taken against the culprit,” the Superintendent of Police stated at the site.
The accident has cast a pall of grief over the entire locality. What began as an ordinary evening for a family ended in irreparable loss, leaving neighbors and relatives mourning in disbelief.
