Agartala, 6th May 2025: The Tripura unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on opposition parties—particularly the Congress and the CPI(M)—accusing them of hypocrisy and past misgovernance.
Addressing a press conference in Agartala, BJP state president and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharya hit out at the Congress for holding ‘Save Constitution’ rallies across the state, questioning the party’s historical commitment to constitutional values.
“The Congress ruled the country for decades but never truly respected Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of our Constitution,” Bhattacharya alleged. “They didn’t even display his portrait in Parliament, and they tried to sideline his contributions. It’s ironic that those who worked against Baba Saheb Ambedkar are now talking about saving the Constitution.”
He further accused the Congress of historical wrongdoing, citing the Emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975. “Many opposition leaders were jailed and journalists silenced. Was that not a direct attack on the Constitution?” he said.
Bhattacharya also referred to the imposition of President’s Rule in Tripura in 1993 during the Congress-TUJS regime. “People remember how an advocate was arrested under the National Security Act at that time. The Congress should introspect instead of pretending to be the protector of democracy,” he added.
Turning his guns on the CPI(M), Bhattacharya responded to their criticism of the BJP over recruitment practices. “The Left ruled Tripura for 25 years. People haven’t forgotten the large-scale recruitment scams under their watch,” he said.
He urged CPI(M) leaders, including Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, to come clean about their past actions. “Before pointing fingers at us, they should take a holy dip in the Ganga to wash away their sins,” Bhattacharya said. “Unlike them, we do not offer government jobs based on political affiliations. Our recruitment process is transparent, and that’s why we are able to hand out appointment letters publicly and with pride.”
