Agartala, 13th April 2025: Former Congress MLA Tapas Dey has written to Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumder, urging immediate rehabilitation measures for vendors recently evicted from the Gangail Road stretch near Lake Chowmuhini market.
In his letter, Dey welcomed the AMC’s initiative to clear unauthorized vendors for the construction of an all-weather road and the planned expansion of the market. He called the move a “vision of progress,” aimed at creating a more structured and efficient trading environment.
However, Dey criticized the eviction drive for lacking a humane and well-planned rehabilitation mechanism. He highlighted that many of the displaced vendors, including several from tribal communities in Taidu, depended entirely on selling fish, vegetables, and fruits for their livelihood.
“It is inhuman to have evicted them without any proper provision for their sustenance,” Dey wrote. “These vendors are now back at the same location, exposed to the scorching sun and torrential rains, which defeats the very purpose of the eviction.”
He questioned the rationale behind the move, calling it rash and poorly executed. “If the vendors were to return under such vulnerable conditions, what was the point of the eviction in the first place?” he added.Calling for immediate action, Dey urged the Mayor to facilitate proper rehabilitation for the affected vendors and provide them with soft loans at minimal interest to help them restart their businesses with dignity.
“Let us not be remembered as those who crushed the vulnerable in the name of development, but as those who stood for compassion and justice,” Dey emphasized.
