Agartala, 15th July 2025: Even as protests continue across Tripura over the recent hikes in power tariffs and fuel prices—including CNG and PNG—the state government has now increased water charges and penalties for unauthorized water connections.
According to a fresh order from the Tripura Jal Board, the decision was approved during its 5th Board Meeting held on May 7, chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who also heads the Board. The revised water tariff structure and penalty norms have come into effect from July 1.
Under the new rates, monthly water charges for individual domestic connections in urban areas—such as Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), various Municipal Councils, and Nagar Panchayats—have been raised from ₹40 to ₹60. While charges for commercial connections remain unchanged at ₹300 per month, the penalty for regularizing unauthorized individual domestic connections has been increased from ₹1,000 to ₹1,500.
The order further emphasizes that all commercial water connections must be meter-based, and any non-domestic connection will now be treated as a commercial one. These connections will be verified against AMC registration records. To implement the changes, the order directs all concerned authorities—including the PWD (DWS), Municipal Commissioner (AMC), Chief Executive Officers of Municipal Councils, and Executive Officers of Nagar Panchayats—to initiate necessary action.
