Agartala, 15th January 2026: In a proactive move to address public concerns surrounding Nipah Virus Disease (NVD), the Tripura Health Department held a press meet today led by Saju Waheed A, Additional Secretary (Health) and Mission Director of the National Health Mission (NHM). The session aimed to raise awareness and share verified information about the virus, its transmission, and preventive measures.
“Nipah Virus is a rare but serious disease. Though Tripura has not reported any cases so far, we are fully prepared and taking all necessary precautions,” said Mission Director Saju Waheed A in a press conference here today. He emphasized that the virus, which is primarily carried by fruit bats, can spread through contaminated food or close contact with infected individuals.
The Health Department confirmed that recent cases have emerged in Kerala and West Bengal, but Tripura remains unaffected. “We urge the public not to panic. Our surveillance systems are active, hospitals are equipped, and healthcare personnel are trained to detect and manage any suspected cases,” HoD of AGMC’s Microbiologist department Dr Tapan Majumder said.
He advised citizens to avoid consuming raw date palm sap, refrain from eating half-eaten fruits found on the ground, and maintain strict hand hygiene. “Prevention is our strongest tool. Simple steps like washing fruits properly and avoiding close contact with sick individuals can make a big difference,” he noted.
The department also called on media outlets to support the dissemination of accurate information. “We request media cooperation to ensure the public receives correct and timely updates. Misinformation can be dangerous,” Dr Majumder stressed.
With enhanced isolation facilities and infection control protocols in place, the Health Department reiterated its commitment to public safety and transparency. Citizens are encouraged to follow government advisories and report any symptoms such as fever, headache, or confusion to the nearest health facility.
Director of Health Services Dr. Debashree Debbarma informed that multiple high-level meetings, three to four in number have already been convened under the leadership of Secretary Kiran Gitte to assess and strengthen preparedness against Nipah Virus Disease. He affirmed that the Health Department has finalized a comprehensive action plan and is fully equipped to respond swiftly to any emerging situation.
“Extensive deliberations have taken place, and we are in the process of forming a dedicated Rapid Response Team that will remain operational 24/7,” Dr. Debbarma stated. He further assured that any individual presenting with respiratory symptoms will undergo thorough diagnostic evaluation as part of the department’s vigilance protocol.
Although isolated cases have surfaced in other parts of the country, Dr. Debbarma emphasized that Tripura will maintain continuous surveillance to ensure early detection and containment.
