BY TC News Desk

Agartala, 24th February 2026: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken suo moto notice of a media report accusing Hangsa Kumar Tripura, a Member of the District Council (MDC) under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), of allegedly extorting ₹22 lakh from a government engineer.

According to the newspaper report dated 23 February 2026, the said funds were allocated for development works under the TTAADC, specifically for the construction of a 4‑kilometre road connecting ADC Village in the Tribal Colony to Bhagyamani Roypara, under the jurisdiction of the Chawmanu Sub‑Zonal Office in Dhalai district. It was further reported that Hangsa Kumar Tripura allegedly threatened the concerned Executive Engineer and compelled him to surrender the work order for the project. Another article titled “Hangsa Kumar’s Unlimited Power” similarly detailed these allegations.

After reviewing the press coverage, the Commission noted that the claims, if true, point to serious wrongdoing — including the misappropriation of public funds and extortion by an elected representative.

In view of the gravity of the allegations, the THRC has directed the Director General of Police (DGP), Tripura, to register a First Information Report (FIR) if a prima facie case is found based on the published reports. The DGP has also been instructed to submit a comprehensive action‑taken report within seven days outlining the steps taken so far.

The Commission has issued notices to multiple officials as necessary parties in the matter. These include:

Chief Executive Member (CEM), TTAADC

Chief Executive Officer (CEO), TTAADC

Director General of Police, Tripura

Superintendent of Police, Dhalai District

Officer‑in‑Charge, Chawmanu Police Station

All have been directed to file detailed reports on the allegations within two weeks.

A separate notice has also been served on Hangsa Kumar Tripura, whose office is located in Khumlwng, West Tripura, seeking his explanation regarding the accusations.

The Commission has scheduled the next hearing and review of submitted reports for 12 March 2026.The order was issued under the authority of Justice Arindam Lodh, Chairperson of the Tripura Human Rights Commission.
