Agartala, 7th April 2026: Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury has called for an investigation into alleged corruption involving leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Northeast.
Speaking in Agartala, Chaudhury accused senior BJP figures of misusing their positions to accumulate significant wealth. He specifically referred to Pema Khandu, alleging that the Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister and his family members had amassed assets worth crores through abuse of power. He claimed that two NGOs have already approached the Supreme Court of India, which has reportedly instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to look into the matter.
Chaudhury also leveled accusations against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging his involvement in various irregular activities across the region over the past decade, including in Tripura. He further claimed that Sarma played a key role in the 2018 political shift in Tripura and continues to influence regional politics. The Assam Chief Minister has denied these allegations, describing them as baseless and warning of possible legal action.
Turning to Tripura, Chaudhury alleged that the assets and financial standing of BJP MLAs and ministers have increased sharply in recent years. He questioned why central agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate, CBI, and the Income Tax Department have not taken action in these cases.
He also criticized what he described as selective enforcement, asking why investigative agencies appear to act quickly against opposition leaders but remain inactive when similar allegations involve ruling party members. Emphasizing the seriousness of the issue, Chaudhury urged the public to speak out, claiming that misuse of political power for financial gain must be addressed.
