Agartala, 13th April 2025: Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury has written to Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, requesting urgent administrative action to reinstall the statue of former Deputy Chief Minister Baidyanath Majumdar at its original site in Kailashahar.
Calling the recent developments “shameful and painful,” Chaudhury sought the Chief Minister’s immediate intervention to ensure the process takes place without obstruction. In the letter, Chaudhury highlighted that on the night of April 11, a statue of Lord Ram was placed at the Srirampur Tri-junction in the Chandipur RD Block of Kailashahar Subdivision, where the original statue of Baidyanath Majumdar once stood.
He reminded that in 2012, local residents had come together to install a full-length statue of Majumdar—widely admired as one of Tripura’s most respected political figures. However, in March 2018, shortly after the Assembly elections, the statue was vandalized and thrown into the nearby Manu River by miscreants.
“The then Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb had condemned the act and encouraged the public to reinstall the statue at the same location,” Chaudhury noted. He mentioned that while there were ongoing local efforts to replace the statue, the sudden installation of another idol at the site in the dead of night has sparked shock and dismay across the state.“This act goes against the cultural ethos and harmonious traditions of Tripura,” he stated.
Chaudhury urged the Chief Minister to take firm steps to curb such divisive incidents and promote unity. He appealed for non-partisan administrative support to reinstall Baidyanath Majumdar’s statue at its original location and to relocate the newly installed statue of Lord Ram to a suitable site with appropriate respect.“Let the legacy of respected public figures be preserved, and the dignity of all faiths be upheld,” Chaudhury concluded.
