Tripura Mahila Congress condemns death of elderly woman, demands action on women’s safety

Agartala, 23rd December 2025:   The Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress has strongly condemned the death of 70-year-old Sulekha Dey in Paschim Bhubanban, describing it as yet another reminder of the insecurity faced by women in the state under the current BJP government.

A delegation of Mahila Congress leaders visited Dey’s residence today but found the house locked. The team then proceeded to Paschim police station to seek details of the incident.

Party leaders criticized repeated claims by the Chief Minister and Home Minister that law and order in Tripura is improving and crimes against women are declining. “The reality is quite the opposite,” the Mahila Congress said in a statement, citing National Crime Bureau data that indicates 40 percent of women in the state live in insecurity.

Since the BJP came to power in 2018, the party alleged, Tripura has witnessed repeated cases of rape, sexual assault, gang rape, abduction, and murder of women, victims ranging from infants to elderly women.

The Mahila Congress demanded that the Chief Minister direct police to conduct an impartial investigation into Dey’s death and ensure strict legal action against the culprits. “Only the harshest punishment will serve as a deterrent,” the statement read, warning that the party would launch a larger movement if its demands are not met.

The delegation included Barjala Block Congress President Upendra Sharma, Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress Vice-Presidents Gouri Majumdar and Shiuli Chakraborty, Sadar District Mahila Congress President Rupa Roy Das, and Barjala Block Mahila Congress President Jharna Bhowmik.

The press communique was issued by Sarbani Ghosh Chakraborty, President of the Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress.
