Agartala, 19th November 2025: In a significant move aimed at expanding higher education infrastructure, the state government has approved the upgradation of Agartala Women’s College into Tripura’s first Government Women’s University. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha at the Civil Secretariat on Tuesday.
Briefing reporters on Wednesday, Tourism and Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said the cabinet has also cleared the proposal to elevate the Tripura Institute of Technology (TIT) into Tripura Technical University, marking another major milestone in the state’s education sector.
Several other key decisions were announced, including the creation of 97 new posts in the Cooperative Department through JRBT and the recruitment of 28 ICDS Supervisors in the Social Welfare and Social Education Department via TBSC.
The cabinet also approved the opening of 119 new Anganwadi centres across the state, along with the recruitment of workers and helpers for each centre. Additionally, 14 new technical posts will be created in the Urban Development Department.
In the field of media and culture, eight faculty members will be appointed at the Tripura Film and Television Institute under the Information Department. The cabinet also made minor amendments to the rules governing retirement allowances for journalists.
The establishment of the state’s first Women’s University and a Government Technical University has been widely welcomed, with congratulatory messages flooding social media platforms. Minister Chowdhury stated that the Women’s University will be set up on the existing premises of Agartala Women’s College, marking a transformative step for women’s higher education in Tripura.
