Agartala, 16th May 2025: The Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), an indigenous students’ organization aligned with the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), has called on the Tripura government to appoint a qualified tribal officer as Director of the Tribal Welfare Department.
In a memorandum submitted to Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, the TSF demanded the immediate replacement of the current director, arguing that leadership of the department should reflect the identity and needs of the communities it serves.
“The Tribal Welfare Department is dedicated solely to the upliftment and development of indigenous communities. It is only logical and just that its leadership be entrusted to someone who has lived experience and deep understanding of tribal culture, challenges, and aspirations,” the TSF said.
The student body stressed that Tripura has several capable tribal officers in the state cadre who possess both administrative competence and grassroots familiarity—qualities they believe are essential for driving impactful tribal welfare policies. “Appointing a deserving tribal officer would not only boost the department’s effectiveness but also serve as motivation for young tribal aspirants entering civil services,” the memorandum stated.
TSF concluded its appeal by urging the government to act swiftly, stating that such a move would affirm its commitment to genuine tribal empowerment and equitable representation in governance.
