Agartala, 30th August 2025: As part of a pre-announced campaign, the Tripura Tea Workers Development Committee organized a memorandum submission drive in Unakoti district, pressing for improved labor conditions and social welfare measures. The initiative saw worker representatives from various tea garden regions gather at the district labor office to present their demands.
Despite prior notification, no senior official was present to receive the memorandum, sparking frustration among the workers. After discussions, the document was eventually handed over to a staff member at the department.
The six-point memorandum included: Disbursement of festive bonuses ahead of the Sharad festival; Wage increases and permanent employment status; Rehabilitation of workers from closed tea gardens; and Resolution of Provident Fund-related complications.
Later, a five-member delegation from the committee submitted a separate nine-point memorandum to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Kailashahar. The delegation comprised Committee President Swadesh Uria, Secretary Lal Munda, and members Jaydeep Roy, Biswajit Shil Sharma, and Gautam Sabar.
Their demands included: Land deeds for homestead and agricultural plots for tribal and marginalized communities residing in tea estates; Separate ration cards and inclusion under food security schemes; Issuance of Aadhaar cards to children and adolescents without identification; Administrative support for linking Aadhaar with Provident Fund accounts; Allocation of government land to workers from defunct tea gardens; and Formation of a dedicated board for the development of tea garden areas.
The SDM attentively reviewed each demand, assuring intervention on issues within his jurisdiction and promising to forward the remaining points to the appropriate departments for further action.
