Agartala,14th June 2024 :: In a shocking incident that took place at Bridge Chowmuhani area in Bishalgarh on Friday afternoon, two young men were detained by local businessmen for deceitfully soliciting funds for the supposed Shraddha ceremony of their living father. The youths hailing from Ranirbazar and Border Gol Chakkar in Agartala, were later handed over to the Bishalgarh Police Station.

According to eyewitness accounts, the duo approached various shops in the Bishalgarh market, claiming to collect money for their father’s Shraddha, a sacred Hindu ritual performed for the peace of the soul of the deceased. Their suspicious behavior prompted the traders to confront them, leading to their arrest.

Upon interrogation, the youths confessed to concocting a scheme to finance their drug habits by exploiting the religious sentiments of the community. “We regretfully admit to having devised this deceitful method to support our addiction,” one of the apprehended youths stated. Before their capture, they had managed to amass approximately Rs 24 from unsuspecting shopkeepers.

The incident has sparked outrage among local leaders and community members. Sajal Kumar Deb, a member of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh state committee and a leader of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, condemned the act, stating, “Such actions not only tarnish the sanctity of our traditions but also exploit the generosity of our traders, who are often the first to aid those in genuine need.”

Subrata Saha alias Basu, a trader from Bishalgarh market expressed his concern, “These incidents make it challenging for us to distinguish between those truly in need and those who misuse our trust for nefarious purposes.”

The community leaders have called upon the state administration to take stringent measures against the rising drug menace that is compelling the youth to engage in such fraudulent activities. “It is imperative that we address this issue at its root to prevent further degradation of our societal values and the exploitation of our religious practices,” added Deb.

The incident has highlighted the urgent need for increased awareness and action against drug addiction, which is not only endangering the lives of the youth but also threatening the cultural fabric of society.
