Agartala, July 30, 2022: Chief Electoral Officer Kiran Gitte on Saturday said that all voters will have link their voter identity cards with Aadhar in August and September next while new voters can enrol their names for four times a year.
Speaking to reporters here on Saturday morning, Gitte said “As per the directions of the Supreme Court and amendment passed by the Parliament, all voter identity card holders will have to link their cards with Aadhar from August 01 to September 30 next. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit each and every house and collect the aadhar card numbers.”
“This decision has been initiated on recommendations of the Election Commission of India, the Ministry of Law & Justice, Govt of India has amended the Representation of Peoples Act, 1950 and the Representation of the People Act, 1951 vide the Election Laws (Amendment) Act, 2021 dated 30 December, 2021,” he added.
CEO said “The four significant decisions are- Use of Aadhar for electoral registration purpose; Multiple qualifying dates; Gender neutral provision for Service and Special Electors; and Power to acquire premises for the purpose of conduct of election.”
On the other hand, 17+ year old youngsters can now apply in advance for having their names enrolled in Voter’s list and not necessarily have to await the pre-requisite criterion of attaining age of 18 years on 1st January of a year. Eligible voters can file their advance applications on the first day of April, July, October and January. After getting registered, he/she will be issued an Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC), he also added.
Gitte also said “Aiming to avoid multiple names of a voter in the electoral rolls, aadhar to be linked with voter ID cards. In January, 70,000 new voter id cards were distributed. At present there are over 27 lakh voters in Tripura.”
