Agartala, 1st December 2024:  An Indian woman, Fatema Khatun, a resident of Shobhapur under Sonamura Police Station in Tripura, was allegedly abducted near the Bibi Bazar Immigration Office in Bangladesh on her way back to India.

Her family has filed a case, seeking urgent action to secure her release.Fatema Khatun, wife of Sadek Mia, had traveled to Raichar in Bangladesh on November 27 with valid passport and visa documents to visit a relative. According to reports, tensions flared in her relative’s neighborhood on the night of November 30, escalating into a violent altercation. The family home was attacked during the unrest, prompting Fatema to decide to return to India the next morning.

However, as she reached the Bibi Bazar Immigration Office in Bangladesh, she was reportedly abducted by a group of miscreants led by Russell Mia, Saidul Islam, and Sumon Mia from Sahapur, Bangladesh. Her husband, Sadek Mia, alleges that despite the presence of Bangladeshi security forces, customs officials, and local police at the scene, no action was taken to prevent the kidnapping.

“My wife kept informing me of her movements until the moment she was abducted. Since then, her phone has been unreachable,” said a distraught Sadek Mia. Accompanied by their son Parvez, he has filed a formal complaint at the Sonamura Police Station, naming the alleged perpetrators and urging Indian authorities to intervene.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of Indian citizens traveling to Bangladesh, even when following legal protocols. Local residents and community leaders have expressed outrage over the lack of response from Bangladeshi authorities at the check post.

“How can such an incident occur in the presence of security forces? If Indian citizens cannot feel safe even with proper documents, this undermines cross-border trust,” remarked a local activist.
