Amid alleged persistent threat culture in West Bengal-run medical colleges and hospitals across the state following rape and murder of a lady trainee medic at RG Kar Hospital in the city, fresh trouble erupted at state-owned Sagar Dutta Hospital in North 24 Parganas when a mob attacked and manhandled junior medics, nurses and staff after a female patient died hours after her admission on Friday, official sources said on Saturday.
The junior medics and hospital staff began cease work on Friday evening in protest against attacks in front of police posting and communicated the details to their pan body West Bengal Junior Doctors
Front.
The WBJDF has decided to convene a meeting later on Saturday after the respective medical colleges complete their meeting and decide upon the situation in the wake of fresh attacks on
them during duty hours, a medic said.
The trouble happened after a female patient was admitted around 2: 57 PM and died around 6 PM despite efforts from the medics to save her.
Angry with the death, some 15/20 people attacked the female ward and assaulted three PGTs, as many junior doctors and nurses and private security personnel.
“The attacks happened in front of police posting in the hospital and the uniformed people were mute spectators”, a medic alleged today.
However, police arrested three suspects in the attack on the medical staff, sources added.
The medics, who resumed duty recently after about 42 days cease work since August 9 following rape and murder of a 31-year-old 2nd year PGT trainee, began fresh cease work from Friday
evening after assaulting and vandalising the College Of Medicine & Sagar Dutta Hospital at Kamarhati in North 24 Parganas.
The medics said they have been demanding proper security in the outpatient department and
hospital wards but the thereat culture and assault on the medical staff inside the government hospitals continued.
