The Rajya Sabha as well as the Lok Sabha were adjourned till 2 pm minutes after they met on third day of the Monsoon Session on Wednesday amid uproar from opposition benches over price rise and increase in GST rates.
An angry looking Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that the members making a ruckus in the House have been bringing down the dignity of the House as Opposition again protested against hike in GST on several commodities, and demanded a roll back.
Birla told protesting MPs several times that he would allow them to raise their issues in the Zero Hour.
“People have not sent you to show placards and shout slogans. If you create a ruckus, I will not allow you, if you go to the seat, you will get a chance,” he said amid uproar by Opposition members.
This attitude of the members is not appropriate for the parliamentary tradition, he added.
As soon as the House met, Opposition MPs were on their feet with placards, raising slogans against GST. MPs trooped near the Speaker’s podium raising slogans.
Several MPs also carried packets of milk, curd and other commodities on which GST has been hiked.
Birla warned the MPs against showing placards, and said it was against rules.
“I will allow you to raise the issue in the Zero Hour, please go back to your seats,” the Speaker said.
As Opposition refused to listen to repeated pleas of the Speaker, he adjourned the House till 2 pm.
In the Rajya Sabha Opposition MPs began demanding discussion on price rise right after renowned former Olympic track and field athlete PT Usha took oath as a member.
“I have given notice under Rule 267 to discuss price rise. The common man has to bear the burden of the rising prices of essential commodities. We want a discussion on this issue,” Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Mallikarjun Kharge said.
