Punjab cops smash Jaish-e-Mohammad terror cell

Date:

In a significant breakthrough in the fight against terrorism, SAS Nagar Police have dismantled a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terror module, arresting three Jammu and Kashmir based individuals linked to the abduction and murder of a cab driver Anil Kumar, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said today.
The arrested individuals are Sahil Bashir, 19, from Handwara Langate, Kupwara; Munish Singh, alias Ansh, 22, from Kotli, Doda; and Aijaz Ahmed Khan, alias Wasim, 22, from Manjpura, Kalamabad. Police recovered a .32 bore country-made pistol and the stolen white Maruti Swift Dzire (PB01-D-6299) used in the crime.
The case began with a complaint from Anil Kumar’s wife, Sudha Devi, who reported that her husband, a taxi driver, left home on August 31, 2025, at 8:30 am for a ride from Kharar to Chandigarh railway station but became unreachable thereafter.
DGP Yadav said that initial investigations revealed three unidentified individuals had hired Anil Kumar’s cab, forcibly taken his vehicle, and killed him.
Acting swiftly, police teams apprehended the suspects in Batala and Gurdaspur. Sahil Bashir is a wanted individual in a UAPA and Arms Act case in Qalamabad, Handwara, J&K, while his brother Aijaz Ahmad, previously arrested with JeM-linked weapons, and both are identified as Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of JeM.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ropar Range Harcharan Singh Bhullar said that, following Sudha Devi’s complaint, Mohali Police, under SP City Sirivenella, SP Investigation Saurav Jindal, and DSP City-1 Prithvi Singh Chahal, mobilized teams led by CIA in charge Harminder Singh and SHO Naya Gaon Satnam Singh.
Using technical and human intelligence, the accused were arrested at bus stands in Batala and Gurdaspur. The suspects confessed to shooting Anil Kumar after an altercation and disposing of his body in Mohali.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) SAS Nagar Harmandeep Hans revealed that the accused had booked the cab under the pretense of traveling to Chandigarh railway station but directed Anil Kumar to the airport road via Phase 3B2, Mohali.
In Kandala village, they shot him dead, stole his vehicle, and fled. Following their disclosures, police recovered Anil Kumar’s body and three bullet shells from the crime scene. A case was registered under Section 127(6) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Naya Gaon Police Station, with additional charges under Sections 140(3), 103, 304 of BNS, and Section 25 of the Arms Act.
