Life came to a grinding halt in Manipur on Wednesday in protest against killings of women, burning of senior citizens, abduction of women and children including an eight month old by alleged Kuki militants.
Former Chief Minister O Ibobi asked if people of Manipur are not Indians as the government has not acted even after the killing of people. He said Congress leaders camped in New Delhi to seek an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but no date was given. Even BJP leaders were not given appointment.
Thirteen organisations including IPSA and CLK imposed shutdown from Tuesday 6 pm to 6 pm of Wednesday. All educational and business establishments were closed down.
Various organisations appealed to Kuki militants to release three women and children abducted by the ultras from Jiribam district on Monday.
Two men, both Meitei, aged 76 and 54, were found burnt to death at Jiribam on Tuesday.
Police said search is on to trace the militants who abducted three women aged 60, 31 and 25 and three children of whom two were aged eight and two and half. The youngest was eight months old . All abducted persons are Meiteis.
Earlier two youths who lost their way were kidnapped and a Kuki organisation COTU released them in exchange for Kuki prisoners.
For the fifth consecutive day on Wednesday, alleged Kuki militants fired bombs, burnt houses, attacked farmers at Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishenpur and other districts. UNI NS SSP
