Agartala, 13th August 2025:   A heartbreaking scene took place in the Nadilak area of Bishalgarh where an elderly couple Shanu Mia and his wife Manuwara Begum have been confined to their bed for the past six months battling life-threatening illnesses without the means to afford treatment.

Begum suffers from kidney disease and requires regular dialysis while Shanu Mia is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. Despite their critical condition, the couple’s financial situation has left them unable to continue treatment. Their two sons both daily wage laborers are struggling to support the family often sacrificing basic meals to cover medical costs.

Local residents moved by the couple’s plight have provided financial assistance to the best of their ability. However, with resources exhausted, villagers are now publicly urging the government to intervene. Speaking to the media personnel, they called for immediate financial support and highlighting that the matter has already been brought to the attention of the local MLA.

Villagers said that the MLA visited the family and advised them to submit the necessary documents to explore eligibility for social welfare benefits. Yet, the community fears that waiting for bureaucratic processes to take place may prove fatal. “We cannot afford to wait for social pensions to be approved. If the government doesn’t step in now, this family may not survive,” one resident warned.
