Iraqi top leaders voice concern over U.S. airstrikes on Iran

Date:

Iraq’s top leaders on Sunday expressed deep concern over recent attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities, describing them as a dangerous escalation that threatens regional and international peace.

President Abdul Latif Rashid, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, Speaker of Parliament Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, and Supreme Judicial Council President Faiq Zaidan met to review the latest regional developments and assess the ramifications of the ongoing conflict, according to a statement from al-Sudani’s media office.

The leaders reiterated Iraq’s firm rejection of any violations of its sovereignty and airspace, as well as the use of Iraqi territory as a base for aggression against neighboring states.

They condemned the strikes on Iran as “blatant aggression” and a clear violation of international laws and norms, the statement said.

The officials called on the international community to act swiftly to halt the conflict, prevent further escalation, and promote dialogue and de-escalation to support regional security and stability.

The meeting followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement on Saturday that U.S. forces had carried out attacks on three Iranian nuclear sites, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.
