Agartala, 7th July 2025: A significant gathering of surrendered NLFT militants and their families from Sepahijala district was held on Monday at the Lenglama Hati Welfare Society building near the Bishramganj vegetable market.
The meeting commenced with the ceremonial lighting of lamps and floral tributes to the martyrs of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT). Prominent NLFT leaders, including President Biswa Mohan Debbarma, General Secretary Upendra Riang, former Secretary Montu Kalai, Kanuraj Debbarma, Ramani Debbarma, and D Bakrang Army Chief D Bamtam, were present at the event. Around 250 surrendered militants and their families attended the meeting.
Speaking to the media, NLFT President Biswa Mohan Debbarma and General Secretary Upendra Riang highlighted the objective of the gathering. “Today’s meeting was about reconnecting with each other, understanding the condition of our families and children after returning to normal life through the tripartite agreement,” said Debbarma.
Riang emphasized that although they have laid down arms and rejoined mainstream society, several demands remain unfulfilled. “We are seeking a special package for surrendered militants. We have demanded the establishment of an IIT and a Central Tribal University in Tripura,” he said.
He further clarified that the NLFT is no longer a political organization. “We want to create a unified social platform — a strong pressure group — to ensure that our legitimate demands are fulfilled by the central and state governments,” he added.
The meeting concluded with a tribute to the families of martyred NLFT members, who were felicitated with wreaths in recognition of their sacrifice.
