Agartala, 11th July 2025: In a concerted push to rejuvenate indigenous fish populations and preserve aquatic ecosystems, the Teliamura sub-divisional fisheries department released 144,000 fingerlings of native species into the Khowai River at Dashami Ghat in Kalyanpur today, under the Prime Minister’s Matsya Sampada Yojana.
This annual stocking initiative, aimed at increasing the availability of local fish varieties and restoring riverine biodiversity, reflects a larger environmental and nutritional agenda. Speaking at the event, Sub-Divisional Fisheries Superintendent Shampa Pal emphasized the ecological significance of rivers as natural habitats for fish and urged the public to safeguard the released stock from harm or illegal fishing activities. “We must prioritize the conservation and responsible nurturing of native species not just for environmental balance, but for the collective good,” Pal stated.
Local MLA Pinaki Das Chowdhury praised the department’s efforts, noting that since the formation of the BJP-led government in Tripura in 2018, the fisheries sector has seen continuous development through diverse and sustained initiatives. He commended the program as a reflection of the government’s commitment to rural livelihoods and ecological preservation.
Joining the release event were Panchayat Samiti Chairman Somen Ghosh, Kalyanpur’s Gram Panchayat Deputy Chief Asim Deb Ray, and prominent social worker Nitai Bol, among others.
