Barnarayan of Udaipur connectivity crisis deepens as river-eroded road remains unrepaired

Agartala, 14th July 2025:   Residents of Sonamura’s Barnarayan locality under Udaipur sub-division face imminent isolation due to the government’s continued inaction on repairing a key road segment submerged during the Gomati River floods in 2024. Despite repeated appeals, the concerned department has reportedly taken no steps toward restoration even into mid-2025.

Locals say nearly half the road was swept away by floodwaters last year, and with fresh rainfall looming, the remaining stretch is on the verge of complete collapse. The damaged road serves as the only access route for hundreds of residents, including farmers, and its closure could severely disrupt daily life and emergency response.

“The officials came and inspected the site, but not a single effort has been made since,” complained one resident, citing growing fears that even light rains may render the road unusable. Many have expressed anger over what they call official apathy, warning that if repairs are not initiated immediately, they will launch a mass protest and blockade the Sonamura–Agartala highway.

It is also alleged that despite locals rebuilding their lives post-flood, the administration failed to implement any measures to curb further erosion along the Gomati Riverbanks. Villagers say emergency services already struggle to reach the area, and a potential breach could plunge the region into crisis.
