Tribal Welfare minister Bikash Debbarma visits hostels after student suicide sparks concern in Dhalai

Agartala, 18th July 2025:   The recent death of a Class 10 student Jakim Marak by suicide at the 82 Miles Proper ST Boys’ Hostel in the Nalakata area of Dhalai district has sent shockwaves through the local community. The precise cause of the student’s tragic death remains unclear.

In response to the incident, Tripura’s Minister for Tribal Welfare, Bikash Debbarma, visited the hostel on Friday to assess the situation and gather information. He was accompanied by MDC Bidyut Debbarma and officials from the Tribal Welfare Department.

During the visit, the minister interacted with teachers and staff responsible for hostel operations to understand any underlying factors that may have led to the student’s death. Expressing deep sorrow over the loss, Minister Debbarma urged guardians and educators to remain vigilant and ensure that students are not falling prey to addiction or mental distress. “We must all pay attention to ensure such incidents do not happen again,” he said.

The minister also inspected the 82 Miles Proper ST Girls’ Hostel and the Residential English Medium School Hostel, examining infrastructural and administrative challenges faced by both institutions. He directed hostel authorities and welfare officials to take swift action to resolve the issues.

“Creating a safe and positive learning environment is essential, Equal focus must be given to students’ mental well-being,” Minister Debbarma emphasized.
