Agartala, 23rd July 2025: A serious allegation of fraud has surfaced at the Axis Bank branch located at Post Office Chowmuhani in Agartala, where a customer has accused the bank of refusing to return his gold ornaments after loan repayment.
The complainant, Rana Debnath, claimed that he had availed a loan of Rs 9.10 lakh a year ago by pledging gold jewelry. Recently, when he approached the bank to repay the loan with Rs 10 lakh and retrieve his ornaments, the bank authorities allegedly failed to return the pledged gold and kept deferring the matter with various excuses for over a month.
On Wednesday, tensions escalated when Debnath was reportedly barred by a security guard from entering the branch. He forcefully entered the bank and demanded an explanation from the branch manager, Kaushik Kundu, who once again asked him to return the next day.
Frustrated by repeated delays, Debnath demanded the immediate return of his gold. After failing to receive any satisfactory response, he threatened to take legal action. To pacify the situation, bank authorities reportedly signed a written agreement promising resolution and asked him to return at 10:30 AM on Thursday.
Rana Debnath suspects foul play and accuses the bank of attempting to cheat him. He also pointed to an earlier incident where the same branch allegedly returned imitation ‘City Gold’ in place of real ornaments to a female customer.
Amid growing complaints, concerns are being raised about the lack of strict regulatory action against the bank, which locals say has been facing frequent accusations in recent times.
