TSECL achieves Solar Milestone, Eyes 50 MW Target by Next Year

Agartala, 24th July 2025:  In a major stride toward clean energy and self-reliance, Tripura has successfully generated 2 megawatts (MW) of electricity through solar power and is now aiming for a significant scale-up—targeting 50 MW of solar generation by next year.

The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), in a press release, described the achievement as a “historic milestone” for the state’s power sector and a crucial step towards energy independence.

The success has been largely driven by the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024. This flagship central government initiative encourages rooftop solar installations, enabling households to meet their energy needs and generate income by selling surplus electricity back to the grid.

“So far, 15,730 registrations have been recorded under the scheme in Tripura. Solar panels have been installed at 591 locations, and 516 beneficiaries have already received government subsidies,” the TSECL stated.

Highlighting the tangible impact, the release noted that 117 consumers have reduced their electricity bills to zero this month. Collectively, they earned ₹43,545 by supplying surplus electricity to the grid—earnings that were directly transferred to their bank accounts.

Under the scheme, consumers can avail up to ₹85,800 in government subsidies. A 1 kW rooftop solar system can generate around 100 units of electricity per month, which is typically enough to power an average household.

“This initiative is not just about saving on electricity bills—it’s also about creating new income streams. In the face of rising power costs, turning rooftops into solar assets is both an eco-friendly and financially empowering move,” the release added.

The TSECL has set an ambitious goal of generating 50 MW of solar power within the next year and has urged all electricity consumers in the state to register through the official government portal and take part in the scheme.
