Agartala, 27th July 2025:    A pall of grief has descended on Barapathari Sonapur area in Belonia subdivision after the tragic death of Trisha Majumdar, a bright Class 10 student of Sonapur Higher Secondary School. Trisha, known for consistently topping her class since sixth grade, passed away this morning at GB Hospital in Agartala city days after she allegedly consumed poison following humiliation by a school teacher.

According to Trisha’s family, the 16-year-old student was deeply distressed after an incident at school during the internal examination. “Madam, why didn’t you give me marks even after I gave the correct answer?” were reportedly Trisha’s last words about the incident. The family claims that Biology teacher Bina Das Patari accused Trisha of cheating and threw her answer sheet at her in front of her classmates.

“Trisha came home crying. She couldn’t bear the insult. She had always come first in class. We never imagined she would take such a step,” said her father.

The incident took place on July 24 last. After returning from school, Trisha allegedly consumed poison. She was first taken to Barapathari Primary Health Centre and later shifted to South Tripura District Hospital. As her condition worsened, she was referred to GB Hospital yesterday, where she died early this morning.

Neighbours and classmates gathered outside the family’s home, mourning the loss of a student they described as “brilliant and kind-hearted.”

Her uncle Bikash Majumdar said, “This is not suicide. It’s murder by humiliation. The teacher must be held accountable.”

The family attempted to lodge a complaint with Santirbazar Police Station, but was allegedly turned away. “When we went to file a case, the officer-in-charge clearly told us the case won’t be accepted. Why? Who is protecting the teacher?” questioned another relative.

The school authorities have remained tight-lipped. Demanding justice, Trisha’s parents have called for the immediate suspension and arrest of the teacher involved, as well as action against the police officer who allegedly refused to register the complaint. A friend from school said, “She always helped others in class. We’ll never hear her voice again.”
