Agartala, 28th July 2025: Demanding clearance of overdue wages, a group of MGNREGA workers staged a sit-in protest today outside the Hawaibari Gram Panchayat office in Teliamura RD Block. The protestors alleged that despite completing 10 days of work under the employment scheme in December last year, their wages had not yet been disbursed. Repeated appeals to the panchayat, they claimed, yielded no results—leading them to resort to public demonstration.
Following the unrest, Block Development Officer (BDO) Biplab Acharjee rushed to the site and engaged with the protesting workers. Speaking to the media later, the BDO explained that “technical issues” were responsible for the delay in wage payment. He assured that discussions with higher authorities were already underway to resolve the matter swiftly.
According to the BDO, wages for subsequent work cycles have already been cleared, and efforts are being made to release dues amounting to over ₹4 lakh for 243 workers for the December period. He promised that payment would be processed shortly.
Later in the day, following further assurances from the administration, the workers decided to call off their protest.
