Congress accuses EC of voter roll manipulation, citing bias and identity rejection

Agartala, 29th July 2025:   Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha today launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging that its ongoing “intensive revision” of the voter rolls is designed to benefit a particular political party by excluding certain sections of genuine voters.

“In Bihar, voters from specific communities are being dropped in the name of intensive revision. The updated lists disproportionately favor the supporters of one particular party. This is happening across the country and is being challenged by opposition forces,” Saha claimed.

Saha further alleged that the revision exercise undermines identity documents issued by the Government of India, describing it as “unconstitutional” and a violation of Supreme Court guidelines. He accused the ECI of willfully ignoring government-approved IDs in the verification process.

“The Commission is rejecting official identity cards issued by the Centre. Poor laborers and sections of tribal citizens in Tripura, who are indisputably Indian might lose their citizenship status simply because they lack birth certificates. This opens the door for disenfranchisement while failing to prevent actual infiltration,” Saha warned.

Citing ongoing revisions in Assam and demands for similar exercises in Tripura by regional parties, Saha expressed concern that the move targets vulnerable populations while ignoring electoral irregularities.

“For seven years, elections have turned into mock exercises with repeated cases of rigging and procedural violations. Yet the Commission has shown no willingness to act,” he said.

Calling for transparency and fairness, the Congress leader emphasized the constitutional duty of the ECI to conduct peaceful and impartial elections, warning that its current trajectory threatens democratic norms.
