Agartala, 30th July 2025:   Members and supporters of the CPIM staged a mass sit-in near the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at Kalidighi in Dharmanagar today, protesting against the recent increase in electricity tariffs and demanding the cancellation of smart meters.

The demonstration began at 1 PM, saw participation from hundreds of CPIM supporters and local residents. North Tripura district secretary Abhijit Dey and other senior leaders addressed the gathering, accusing the state government of deliberately burdening citizens with higher power costs amid rising unemployment and inflation.

Speakers alleged that smart meters were making electricity unaffordable for ordinary people, with inflated bills causing public outrage. They warned of intensified agitation if the government fails to withdraw its decision.

Meanwhile, the CPIM staged a mass public demonstration in Kailashahar today condemning the recent hike in electricity and drinking water charges and the government’s decision to install smart meters without public consensus.

Led by CPIM’s Unakoti District Secretary Krishnendu Chowdhury and Sub-Divisional Secretary Anjan Roy, the protest drew large numbers of party supporters and local residents who thronged Central Road carrying placards and raising slogans against what they termed “anti-people policies.”

Addressing the gathering, Anjan Roy criticized the unilateral implementation of smart meters and price hikes during an ongoing economic crisis. “The government is ignoring public opinion and subjecting the common man to financial oppression. We will organize resistance in every neighborhood. If these decisions are not reversed, our movement will escalate,” Roy said.
