Nearly 2.87 Lakh Ganja Plants Destroyed in Major Anti-Narcotics Operation in Sonamura

Agartala, 30th July 2025:  In a significant crackdown on illegal cultivation of narcotic plants, a joint operation led by Sonamura Police destroyed approximately 2.87 lakh ganja (cannabis) plants in the Bathadola GP and Bijoy Nagar ADC Village areas on Wednesday.

The operation, conducted based on secret inputs, was carried out between 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM in forest areas of the region. Officer-in-Charge of Sonamura Police Station, Tapas Das, said that the raid resulted in the detection and destruction of 11 ganja nursery plots containing around 2.75 lakh mature plants. Additionally, another 12,000 newly planted ganja saplings were uprooted from an estimated 8-acre patch of land.

In total, approximately 2.87 lakh cannabis plants were destroyed during the drive. The estimated value of the destroyed contraband is around Rs 2.5 lakh, police sources said.

The coordinated effort was executed jointly by personnel of Sonamura Police Station, 81 Battalion BSF (Batadola BOP, Matinagar BOP, and Kulubari BOP), Boxanagar and Jatrapur forest divisions, 9th and 11th Battalion of Tripura State Rifles (TSR), and other sister agencies.

Authorities have intensified surveillance in the region to combat the spread of narcotics cultivation and to identify those involved in the illegal trade.
