Allegations of bias against BDO spark unrest in Nadiyapur Shanicherra Gram Panchayat

Agartala, 31st July 2025:    Tensions flared in the Nadiyapur Shanicherra Gram Panchayat on Wednesday following allegations against Block Development Officer (BDO) Amit Chanda accused of political favoritism and obstruction of developmental projects.

Local panchayat members claim the BDO has been working in favor of the CPI(M), allegedly disrupting the functioning and growth of the BJP-led panchayat. According to officials, Panchayat Secretary Mohi Uddin was deliberately transferred, triggering backlash. In a surprising turn, two new secretaries were reportedly pressured to assume charge within a mere 48-hour window.

One of the most contentious points involves the cancellation of work orders for 13 key water harvesting projects under the panchayat’s jurisdiction. The move has stirred significant public outrage, with villagers accusing the BDO of undermining essential infrastructure development.

Around 5 PM on Wednesday, unrest peaked as panchayat leaders and local residents laid siege to the panchayat office, placing staff under watch in a dramatic protest. Both former and current secretaries, along with the Gram Rojgar Sevak (GRS), were confined inside the office as demonstrators pledged to continue their agitation until demands were met.

Protesters are united around two primary demands: Immediate reinstatement of transferred Secretary Mohi Uddin and revival of the 13 scrapped water-harvesting work orders.
