Agartala, 5th August 2025:  A troubling case of alleged job fraud has surfaced at Belonia, where a man reportedly impersonated a post office official and extorted money from a local family in exchange for a promised government position.

According to a formal complaint filed with Belonia police station, Ajit Debnath, a resident of Sukanta Nagar and his mother Dipali Debnath accused a man identified as Sourav from Kolkata of impersonating a post office recruiter. Sourav allegedly contacted Ajit’s wife Shilpi Debnath via mobile phone and collected Rs 60,000 in multiple installments promising her a job as a Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) in the post office.

“Today, Sourav demanded another Rs 18,400 and claimed three officials from the Belonia Post Office would visit our residence for verification. He even sent a forged joining letter and a so-called police clearance document to Shilpi’s mobile,” said Ajit Debnath.

Suspicions grew when Ajit and Dipali visited the Belonia Post Office to verify the claims. A senior official dismissed the matter as a scam and urged them to contact the police.

Later that afternoon, Shilpi Debnath’s husband and father-in-law approached the Belonia police station to lodge a formal complaint and called on authorities to take swift action. “We want justice. Our savings are gone and this fraudster is still at large. He must be arrested,” Ajit said.

Local media personnel were also informed of the incident with the family seeking public awareness and demanding stringent action to prevent similar frauds in the future.

Police said an investigation has been launched to trace the alleged perpetrator and verify the documents provided.
