Agartala, 11th August 2025:  The Managing Director of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) on Monday inspected a severely damaged 12-kilometer stretch of the Khowai–Kamalpur National Highway in Tripura, just two years after its completion.

According to Tripura PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte, the road is riddled with potholes due to poor maintenance. “A few months ago, I visited the site with engineers. Today, NHIDCL MD Dr. Kishan Kumar reviewed the situation, held a meeting in Agartala, and inspected highways across West, Dhalai, North, and Khowai districts,” he said.

Gitte explained that the project carries a five-year maintenance clause, but lapses by the agency and officials have led to the deterioration. “The MD has ordered show-cause notices to engineers, concerned officials, and the contractor. If repairs are not completed by October, strict action will follow,” he added.

The Central Road Research Institute has already conducted a study on the damaged section, and restoration work on the 12 km stretch will begin soon. Another review meeting will be chaired by Dr. Kumar on Tuesday to monitor progress.
