Italian PM seeks unity among coalition partners

Date:

Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Draghi on Wednesday sought unity among his alliance partners to avoid a government collapse.

Two governments have changed in the country during the last three years.

He called for a new pact to save his unity government from collapse.

He told Italy’s Senate, a completely new agreement was “the only way, if we want to stay together”, BBC reported.

The former European Central Bank chief offered his resignation last week after the Five Star Movement (M5S), a key ally of the coalition, snubbed a vote on a €26bn cost of living package.

“We need a new, sincere and concrete pact: are you ready?,” the PM added.

President Sergio Mattarella had rejected his resignation, asking the 74-year-old PM to address parliament this week.

The prime minister said the mobilisation of Italians who wanted the unity government to continue was “impossible to ignore”. He praised the public, unions, universities and industry as well as health workers and the world of sport for their “undeserved” appeals to carry on, the broadcaster further reported.

A confidence vote will take place on Wednesday evening.

Demonstrations have taken place at many places seeking Draghi to stay in office.
