Agartala, 13th August 2025:  Tipra Motha Party legislator Ranjit Debbarma has urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to expedite the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Tripura to identify and deport illegal migrants.

In a letter to Shah, Debbarma cited Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directives issued on May 19, 2025, ordering the detection, deportation, and pushback of illegal migrants within 30 days, followed by a May 28 communication to state authorities and the Bureau of Immigration.

He alleged that despite repeated appeals to the Chief Secretary, DGP, district magistrates, police superintendents, Assam Rifles, and BSF officials, the state government has failed to establish detention camps or constitute effective Special Task Forces (STFs) across all districts.

According to Debbarma, the STF mechanism suffers from “serious infirmities” — no deployment of central forces, no inclusion of civil administration officers, no specific guidelines for implementing the MHA’s May 19 directives, and no designated headquarters. He accused the state government of treating the matter as “an eye wash” while illegal infiltration allegedly continues “on a massive scale,” with some migrants involved in “anti-India activities.”

Warning that the “national security and sovereignty of Tripura as well as India are under grave threat,” the MLA called on the Centre to introduce the NRC in Tripura on the lines of Assam, ensuring active involvement of central police and administrative agencies.
