Agartala, 19th August 2025: The Tripura Government Teachers’ Association (TGTA) has accused the state police administration of obstructing a peaceful rally planned to press for a nine-point charter of demands, including payment of pending dearness allowance and reversal of the National Education Policy 2020.
Speaking to media personnel at the Shiksha Bhavan, Melarmath here today, TGTA General Secretary Asish Chowdhury alleged that the police denied permission for the rally just hours before its scheduled start. The procession was set to begin at 11 am from the Shiksha Bhavan and proceed through key city junctions- Kaman Chowmuhani, Jackson Gate and Paradise Chowmuhani culminating in a public discussion led by union representatives.
According to Chowdhury, over a thousand teachers from 23 subdivisions across Tripura were expected to participate in the demonstration. However, yesterday evening, the union received a WhatsApp message from police authorities citing law and order concerns and a shortage of security personnel as reasons for denying permission.
“What’s surprising,” Chowdhury noted, “is that no other major event was observed in Agartala on the day of our rally. This clearly shows the government is afraid of teachers’ voices and is trying to suppress our democratic rights.”
Despite the setback, TGTA vowed to intensify its movement in the coming days. “Today’s rally may have been blocked, but we will organize on a larger scale next time,” Chowdhury asserted.
The union’s key demands include: Immediate clearance of pending dearness allowance for teachers and staff; Repeal of the National Education Policy 2020; Appointment of one physical education teacher in every school; and Urgent employment measures for the 10,323 teachers previously terminated.
